It is transmitted by direct contact with infected cats. It is also possible to be indirectly transmitted by inanimate objects fomites which have recently been contaminated with the saliva, eye discharge, or nasal discharge of an infected cat. Long term L-lysine supplementation for FVR cats may be helpful in reducing the number of future relapses. FVR is also one of the few viral diseases in veterinary medicine where antiviral medications may be beneficial.
Like the feline herpesvirus, the calicivirus is a very contagious upper respiratory infection. Discharge from and inflammation of the nose and eyes, fever and sneezing are all symptoms of FVR. While these symptoms may be mild in healthy cats and start to clear up after about 5 to 10 days, in more serious cases symptoms can last for 6 weeks or longer.
For kittens, senior cats and immune-compromised cats, symptoms of FHV-1 can persist and grow worse, leading to loss of appetite, severe weight loss, depression and sores in your cat's mouth.
In cats that are already ill with FVR, bacterial infections can become a problem. Even once signs of this disease have vanished, the virus stays dormant in your cat's body and can repeatedly return over your cat's lifetime. Symptoms of feline calicivirus include nasal congestion, sneezing, eye inflammation, and clear or yellow discharge from the cat's eyes or nose. Some cats will also develop painful ulcers on their tongue, palate, lips or nose.
Often cats infected with feline calicivirus suffer from loss of appetite leading to weight loss , fever, enlarged lymph nodes, squinting and lethargy. There are a number of different strains of feline calicivirus, some produce fluid buildup in the lungs pneumonia , and still others lead to symptoms such as fever, joint pain and lameness. Feline Panleukopenia is an extremely common and serious virus in cats that causes damage to bone marrow, lymph nodes and the cells lining the intestines.
Symptoms of FPL include depression, loss of appetite, high fever, lethargy, vomiting, severe diarrhea, nasal discharge, and dehydration. Is this something important? This disease can lead to a severe upper respiratory tract disease including rhinitis , sneezing and conjunctivitis. Other less common symptoms include oral ulceration and primary pneumonia. Similar to people with cold sores, the virus can lay dormant in cats until they are stressed, which causes a flare-up of symptoms.
Similar to FHV-1, feline calicivirus typically causes upper respiratory tract disease and oral ulceration. It can also cause chronic stomatitis , pneumonia, systemic disease or lameness. Occasionally, a more severe strain—virulent systemic feline calicivirus VS-FCV —can travel through a population, which can result in more debilitating symptoms as well as infection of the internal organs. This more severe strain is frequently fatal.
FPV is highly contagious and has a high mortality rate. It causes anorexia, vomiting, fever and severe diarrhea. The virus also attacks the bone marrow and lymph nodes, which leads to a very low white blood cell count and prevents the cat from being able to activate their immune system normally. It affects blood cells in the intestinal tract, bone marrow, and brain, and is possibly the most dangerous of the viruses covered by FVRCP.
A kitten sick with panleukopenia virus requires veterinary care right away, as the disease is often fatal. This results in a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia, which causes tremors and underdeveloped coordination and balance — something that might not be apparent until a kitten first tries to walk.
Fortunately, many kittens with cerebellar hypoplasia can lead very happy lives and adapt to perform all the daily activities other cats do. These kittens just need loving homes ready to meet their special needs. They may experience slight swelling and soreness near the injection site, develop a low-grade fever, have a decreased appetite, or act a little sluggish.
These signs almost always go away within a few days.
