I didn't want that I wanted to go out and find my own thing, so I did that with vocals and the guitar. I actually did take classical lessons in high school as an elective. But I mostly just smoked weed and played Black Sabbath songs with my friends.
I got a C minus-- but it worked out in the end. Was there anything you took away from the lessons that you were surprised about? Yeah, definitely. It helped me out with my upper register, um, it taught me basically that I can get the same effect for about half the effort, which was great to know I was wasting too much energy before! It was a very positive experience; I liked it a lot. Tell me about the four listening events you guys have for the album. What inspired the band to put them on?
It's really great! We're doing it in L. They are basically drinking parties with our new record playing in the background. You know, we will have contests, and will all be different. Some will have Machinehead karaoke contests where fans can compete for prizes. It'll be really fun, especially to give a little something back to the U.
After the Mayhem tour it was such an incredible connection we decided it'd be a great thing to do. I love that new Kanye West and Jay-Z record.
I've been playing the hell out of it. It's really '90s rap, like that collage sound with lots of movie samples and random The beats are really out there and different.
I also really like the new All Shall Perish, album too. I read about a year ago that your house was broken into and things like your son Xander's guitar and a gift from Dimebag were stolen.
Did you ever recover any of that? You know, I never did. The media really focused on the guitars but they got us for about three grand worth of stuff But at the same time, some great music came out of it. And at the same time, I started taking classical guitar lessons. I used to be pretty good at it, but I actually wanted to get some theory behind it. To put myself in that place where I feel like a complete retard. It was awesome.
Like, after all these years of doing this to go and learn I just fully went into this learning mode. I know that came out with the new record. There's a big, classical element to it. Some of the vocal range is definitely the highest that I've ever hit. I feel like I've really pulled it off and I sang my ass off. I'm really proud of what we were able to accomplish on the record.
Go to this location for the complete interview. This is your chance to be part of Machine Head history! People want cool shit and cool interviews. In the video footage below, Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel talks about the work in progress for the band's new album, Unto The Locust, due in September:. Then I listened a little more closely, and it was true. But you guys kept right on playing. I remember a couple of times when you just unloaded on some people and just called them out hella hard.
You stood your ground. Our first three tours were with Napalm Death, Obituary and then five months with Slayer. Especially on that Napalm Death tour. So you take your knocks and you learn what to do and what not to do. That was a horrible night — we got three or four songs cut from our set, the power kept cutting out, I was screaming at the house monitor guy.
Especially early on, we fought a lot with the audience. I used to wear hats onstage for a while, and people would come onstage and steal my hat off my head while I was singing. So we decided to stop fighting and just do a lot of drugs and drink a lot. For the last five years or so, Kerry King and I have had this very public beef. We recently squashed it, and it was cool to finally do that, because both he and I have so much respect for each other.
What the fuck? They just end up being dicks or you hear about them talking shit, and it just sucks.
